Thanks Cale for sharing this newscast and Don for giving us the name of the bicyclist. It’s so important that our state get tougher on drunk driving. This is the second incident within 2 or 3 months now.

Sad story. I agree with tougher drunk driving laws, unfortunately, my ideas of “tougher” would not be allowed by the ACLU. The laws are fairly tough already, so, why are there parking lots at bars?

After reading the entire story, the thing that kept buzzing through my head was another subject near and dear to my heart. He was driving a suburban. I believe that is a very large car. I am waiting for the day when we all drive these fast light, all electric vehicles. Can you imagine had he been hit by an aptera? He probably would have gotten up and smacked him instead of this horror. I say we need to get those monsters off the road.
I agree with Cokecop, that the laws are plenty tough. The answer lies in other things. I think big cars being taken off the road is another factor.

this is terrible!
a retired military man: even worse, this is not the treatment they deserve.
i didn’t see this on the news but am sickened to hear this kind of report as i ride my bike almost every day. but the news is not much better with car accidents: what can you do?
when i ride my 12 miles to and from work i wear VERY visible clothing: lime green bathing suit bottoms, pink shirts, crazy socks, and always always a bright orange bandana flying from my backpack. its imperative to follow all bike and motorist rules of the road and to not be cocky in assuming everybody knows bikes have the right of way. just yesterday some idiot made a right turn in front of me causing me to crash into his bumper, despite the fact i was in my own bike lane (on alta dr.) all the way to the right. another motorist stopped to see if i was OK, but it still proves it could have been a nasty situation b/c too many people still just DON’T pay attention!
my advice is to be over visible and over cautious: wear those neon yellow socks from that 80’s party! sport a rainbow clown wig under your helmet! stop at all intersections (where applicable) and take a look around, then move with cars for protection.
it could save your life.
ride safe!
