YES!  IT IS OFFICIAL!  The speed limit along Red Rock Canyon’s National Scenic Byway (Route 159) has been reduced to 50 miles per hour. The celebration and unveiling of the new speed limit took place this morning at the Red Rock Overlook.  I regret I was unable to attend due to a previous commitment.  I owe a great deal of thanks to  Donna Webster,  both a BikingLasVegas.com and Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club Member, who was able to attend the Red Rock Speed Limit Celebration today and for providing us with an official picture of the ‘unveiling’ of the new speed limit sign.  Thank you Donna!

According to Senate Bill SB240, July 1st, 2009 is the effective date in which NDOT must lower the speed limit. I’ve heard from a few sources that the speed limit will be dropped from 60mph to 50mph, and at some curves a 35mph advisory speed limit would be posted (this is a result of the Scenic Byway speed limit law passed by the State Legislature this spring).  Be on the lookout July 1st as you ride into Red Rock for the lowered speed limit signs.
