I just sent out an email blast to the member base for this event. I received an email from Steve Ireland that you might find interesting if you plan on doing the ride:
Hello Lisa,
Just needed to respond to the post for the Flagstaff ride. It is a very nice ride though it can be harder than the Tour de Fire we put on last week if you are not ready for it.. This might help newer century riders from making the mistakes I made on that event in 06.
1st off is the weather - I made the mistake of checking ONLY the Flagstaff weather which showed great 75 degree temps and brought my Hammer "fuel" accordingly. Problem was I did not know the route took us out over the hill to the desert with the craters. It was 110 on the desert side of the hill and I just about died (really) from lack of water and fuel.
Since I was using hammer stuff - I did not eat the "simple sugars" at the stop (blew by the 1st 1 ) and their mileage to next stop was off by a few miles up a good grade hill.
If I would of just known, I would of enjoyed it much better. although in 07 I was on my tandem on a much more relaxed pace but we ran into a hard "wall of rain" on the way back. Yea you could see where it went from dry to wet.
Being informed can make for a much better ride when prepared. I do love Flagstaff though.
Have a Great Day,
Steve Ireland
